Welcome to the website of Cumbrian photographer and printer Paul Maven.
Paul has been involved in the visual arts, and photography in particular, for more than forty years. His work is rooted in the landscapes of Northern Britain, with a particular connection to Cumbria and the Lake District.
This collection brings together colour and monochrome landscape photography, alongside a small selection from his Flora & Fauna series — a celebration of the wildlife and natural environment found across the northern landscape.
Much of the work featured here has been photographed in the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales and Northern Pennines, as well as the mountains and dramatic coastlines of the north-west Highlands and islands of Scotland. Paul works with both digital and traditional film cameras, choosing whichever approach best suits the subject.
Alongside photography, Paul produces one-off and limited-edition alternative process prints, including Cyanotypes and Argyrotypes, as well as handmade Linocut prints. Each is produced by hand, giving the finished work a character and individuality that cannot be replicated by purely mechanical processes.
Paul first picked up a camera in the early 1980s and spent much of his working life as a professional photographer. Although now retired from commercial image-making, photography remains central to his creative life. He now spends much of his time photographing the fells, valleys and changing weather of his adopted home in Cumbria.
“Photography has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember and will continue to play the leading role in my creative output. It is a passion play. Something that sustains me continuously.”
